The Madagascan
floristic region (Madagascar, Comoro Islands, Mascarene Islands,
Seychelles and Aldabra islands) includes 30 Ficus species (Berg
1986; Berg & Wiebes 1992). Madagascar itself contains 25 species (16
endemic species; 5 shared with surrounding islands; 4 shared with
continental Africa: F. lutea, F. polita polita, F.
sycomorus and F. trichopoda) (Berg,
1986). Here
we also treat F. sycomorus sakalvarum as a good species based on
morphology and the fact that this taxon has a unique pollinating wasp
species associated with it, pushing the total for Madagascar to 26
species.
