Checklists for countries have little
biogeographical meaning, but countries that are signatories to the Rio
Convention on Biodiversity are required to inventory the biological diversity
that they safeguard. Consequently, checklists of the fig wasps of South Africa
and Namibia have been compiled. The scope of the checklists will be expanded to
include further countries as knowledge of local faunas is acquired. Fig
wasp species richness is poorly known for the majority of countries.
The core of the following catalogues is drawn from
information contained in
Berg & Wiebes'
book (1992), but has been taxonomically
and distributionally updated
incorporating subsequent revisions. The catalogue and checklists will be
continually updated as our knowledge of fig wasp systematics advances.
These checklists compliment the
initiative to catalogue the biodiversity of Southern Africa through the collaborative input
The Insects of South Africa
co-ordinated by Martin Villet of Rhodes University. Links to further
entomological sites (societies, universities and museums) in southern Africa are
provided on these pages.
