Checklist of Ugandan Ficus (Moraceae)

(Life; Embryophyta (plants); Angiospermae (flowering plants); Eudicotyledons; Order: Rosales; Family: Moraceae; Genus: Ficus)

Checklists

Uganda has a fig richness of 47 species. Forty-three Ficus species were recorded from Uganda by Berg & Hijman (1989). Three additional species were added with the resurrection of species formerly synonymised under F. thonningii (Burrows & Burrows 2003). An additional species, F. chirindensis and a further subspecies of F. ottoniifolia macrosyce have now been recorded (Ipulet et al. In press). Ten species are Distributionally restricted (endemic) to east Africa. Uganda has a higher fig tree species richness than Kenya (36 species) or Tanzania (39 species). The higher Ugandan species richness is attributable to the presence of ten species that are typical elements of the Guinea-Congolian forest region and whose Distribution does not reach as far east as Kenya or Tanzania. Thirty fig species occur in all three countries, six are shared between Tanzania and Kenya, six between Tanzania and Uganda and one between Uganda and Kenya (Berg & Hijman, 1989; van Noort & Compton 1999) and updated with change in status of F. thonningii complex of species (van Noort et al 2007).

Genus: FICUS
