Thirteen species of Ficus occur within Namibia, none of which are endemic. This is a third of the species total for the southern African subregion (defined as including Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique south of the Zambezi River, South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho). The relatively low species richness for a country of this size is indicative of the largely arid habitats found in Namibia. The Distributions of two arid-adapted species: Ficus ilicina (Sonder) Miquel and F. cordata cordata Thunburg are centered in Namibia, but both species extend north into south-western Angola and south into the Northern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa. A few tropical species occur in the north of the country. For example, F. fischeri is present in the Caprivi Strip and F. bubu has recently been recorded in Kaokoland (van Jaarsveld & Voight 2003).
